Superintendents: who they are

What a species superintendent does and how to reach ours.

Every species at the Navajo County Junior Livestock Show (pigs, goats, lambs, steers, and turkeys) has asuperintendent: a volunteer on the Junior Livestock Committee who is in charge of that species from tagging day through Sunday load-out. Think of them as the referee and the head coach for your barn.

What a superintendent does

  • Runs tagging day. They set the date, put the official NCJL ear tag in your animal, and check your paperwork. If you can't make tagging day, you must arrange an earlier date with them. No animal is tagged after the designated day.
  • Approves replacements. If your animal is sifted at tagging or dies (with photo proof), the superintendent and the NCJLC decide whether and how you can replace it.
  • Checks you in at the fair. They verify every ear tag at weigh-in and inspect your animal. Missing or unreadable tags are their call.
  • Inspects stalls. Feeding and stall cleaning must be done by 9:00 AM each day. Superintendents inspect randomly and give one warning before a $25-per-day fee.
  • Takes protests. Any protest about a class goes to the superintendent right after the class, followed up in writing within one hour.
  • Checks you out Sunday. You cannot leave until your pen is clean and the superintendent signs you out.

Our superintendents

Heads up: Superintendents can change from year to year. These are the 2026 superintendents from the NCJLC's fair-week notice. If the roster changes for 2027, tell the club leader so this page gets updated.

How to work with them

  1. Introduce yourself at tagging day. Shake hands, say your name and club. They remember polite kids.
  2. Text, don't just call. During fair week they're running between the scale and the ring. A short text with your name, species, and question gets answered fastest.
  3. Bring your paperwork to them, not the other way around. Seasonal Pass, YQCA certificate, ShoWorks entry confirmation.
  4. Ask before you assume. Pen assignments, feeder hanging, tarps, and load-out all go through them.
  5. Say thank you. They volunteer a whole week of their lives. A thank-you card after the fair goes a long way, and it's great record-book material.
